The Planet Path in Lemvig

The Planet Path is a model of our solar system on the scale 1 to 1 billion. Thus, this Limfjord tale consists of an unusual walk through the solar system. In addition, the planets are named after Roman gods, and, therefore, you will also get the opportunity to become acquainted with these gods. After the walk, you have free admission to Lemvig Museum.

Take a walk through the inner solar system and get the wiser on astronomy and the location of the earth in the universe. On this walk along this Planet Path in Lemvig, you can listen to the tale about the Roman gods after whom the planets have been named. The Planet Path consists, namely, of a number of granite and bronze sculptures which have been placed in the landscape at the Limfjord.
The walk starts at the Sun

The walk starts in Lemvig at Lemvig Museum. Here the Sun is situated in a large turn of the road –a large bronze ball which shows the size of the sun. It has a diameter of 1.39 metres – and, thus, it has in fact a diameter of 1,391,000 km. From the Sun, you will follow the Path trough the whole area – and, after you have taken a walk which corresponds to 57.9 million kilometres in space, you will at first arrive to the planet Mercury.

The walk goes past Venus, the Earth with the Moon, Mars and Jupiter. When you arrive at Vinkelhage, you will pass Saturn with the rings. From there, the planets are situated far away from each other, but if you continue long enough, you will arrive at Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. The planets have been named after Roman gods, and when you participate in the Limfjord tale along the Planet Path, you will of course also learn more about them.

They inspired Thøger Larsen

On your way, you can also listen to a tale about how the planets and the beautiful landscape at the cove Lem Vig inspired the poet Thøger Larsen when he wrote the well-known songs “Danmark nu blunder den lyse nat” and “Du danske sommer, jeg elsker dig”. Thøger Larsen, who was born and grew up near the point Gjeller Odde right outside Lemvig, was all his life an enthusiastic amateur astronomer. After the tour, you will get free admission to Lemvig Museum where it is possible to see the exhibition “En digter under stjerner” which tells about Thøger Larsen’s interest in astronomy. Thøger Larsen died in 1928.

It is also possible to listen to a dramatized Limfjord tale along the Planet Path. Go to www.planetstien.dk and download the tale to your mp3-player. It is free of charge. Players with the tale can also be borrowed in Lemvig Museum against deposit.
