The people of the Limfjord through the ages
|
|
Limfjordscentret Doverodde has been furnished in the best preserved merchant’s house in the western part of the Limfjord. Here you have the opportunity to participate in a Limfjord Tale about the Limfjord and its people through the ages.
|
|
Limfjordscentret Doverodde Købmandsgård was opened in 1999, and it now provides many exciting experiences for both children and their parents.
The closest neighbour is the Limfjord, and the Limfjord centre fits perfectly into the village of Doverodde. In the old warehouse from 1854, you can find exhibitions, and the view from the 42 metre tall silo (with built-in elevator!) is impressive.

The good story
The exhibitions tell the story of the merchant’s house. They also tell the story of the local dairy, the shipping and fishing trades on the Limfjord, the horse trades, and of life on the country in general. Limfjordscentret specializes in telling good stories about the real life in Thy and the western part of the Limfjord. Among other things, you can see and experience the aquarium, the tank where you can touch the fish and crayfish of the Limfjord, and the exhibition of arts and crafts from Thy.
The seals and swans of the Limfjord
There are many seals in the Limfjord – usually of the species that we call the common seal. Sometimes you can be so lucky that you find a seal lying on the landing stages near the Limfjordcentre. You might see a seal pup lying waiting for its mother who has gone out to hunt for food. The pup can wait alone for hours and there is no need to worry about the fact that it is sick or has been abandoned although it howls and stays in the same place all day. If you find a seal pup lying all alone, it is important to keep your distance and leave it in peace. Otherwise you may prevent the mother from returning to feed its pup.
From the tower you can be lucky to spot swans and their cygnets since there are several pairs, which are breeding in the area (perhaps you should bring your own binoculars). The swans are monogamous animals, and they stay with the same partner year after year. If one of them dies, the other swan never finds a new partner, instead it will remain alone for the rest of its life.
The Limfjord then and now
During this Limfjord Tale, the guide will tell you about the Limfjord and its people, and the guided tour ends with a discussion about the state of the Limfjord today.
