Venø Church - Denmark's smallest church
|
|
This Limfjord Tale is about Denmark’s smallest church, which is situated on the small island of Venø in the Limfjord near Struer. In spite of its small size, the church holds a lot of interesting tales, for instance about the building of the church, its contents, and about its relation to the manor Volstrup in the mainland. And of course the Limfjord Tale about the church can be combined with other experiences on Venø.

Venø Church is situated in the middle of the island, and it is without a doubt the oldest building on the island. We do not know for sure exactly how old it is, but it is believed to be from the end of the 1500s. The original church building was approx. 7 metres long, and it had only one window.

The small porch has been added later, and the church room itself has also been expanded at a later point in time. In the southern external wall, you can still sense the old, sealed entrance, and the foundation stones clearly tell the tale of the size of the original church. In the beginning, the church was thatched, but Pomeranian beams, a new attic, and a tiled roof were built around 1860.
The manor bell
The bell of the church used to be the manor bell of Volstrup Manor between Struer and Vinderup, and this indicates that the church was built by the then owner of Volstrup Manor – and of course the people of Venø.
The baptismal font, which is made of granite, is probably from way back in the 1200s, and therefore we must assume that it has been used in another church before it came to Venø. The pulpit, however, is from around the same time as the oldest part of the church. The altarpiece is from 1882 and is a copy of a painting by Anton Dorph.
The priest was also the school teacher
From 1750, Venø has been an independent cure with its own priest who, however, also functioned as the teacher of the children of the island. It was the hymn writer H.A. Brorson who was also the bishop in Ribe (the district to which Venø belonged) who made this arrangement at the request of the people of Venø. This special rule was, however, abolished in 2004 when Struer Municipality closed down the school on Venø. Today, the children of Venø attend Bremdal School on the mainland.
