The passage grave of Lundehøj

This Limfjord Tale takes you 5000 years back in time to the Stone Age. The Tale is about the passage grave, which is found on a hilltop in southern Thy. You will hear about the technological skills and the perception of death of the people during this period.

The Stone Age began in Denmark around 4000 BCE and lasted until 1700 BCE. During this period, people started to cultivate the earth and to keep livestock. The people of this period usually buried their dead in cairns and passage graves built of granite boulders. One of the finest and most beautifully situated ones, is the passage grave of Lundehøj in southern Thy.
It can be found in a barrow on a hilltop near Ullerup, north of Heltborg, and this passage grave is special because it contains an extra little burial chamber.

Lunde and Favre

The passage grave of Lundehøj was discovered in 1837 by two boys who were on their way to confirmation class, and the legend has it that it was here the giant Lunde lived. But another giant named Favre lived nearby – and the two were constantly fighting each other. In the end they killed each other in a giant fight, and on the spot where they died no seeds could be planted and grow.

What did the people of the Stone Age think?

This Limfjord Tale is about the society of the Stone Age and about the technology that was mastered at the time and was necessary to create a building of such dimensions. What were they thinking about, what was their perception of death, and how did they care for the dead of the family? The burial chambers were often used several times, and the dead often carried weapons and jewellery with them in the grave.

The Limfjord scenery

Of course it will be possible to enter the dark passage grave by crawling through the small stone passage into the burial chamber. Afterwards, there will be time to sit on the green hilltop for a while and enjoy the Limfjord scenery as it looked 5000 years ago and as it still looks today.
