Jenle - the home of Jeppe Aakjær

Jenle means “lonely” or “alone” in Jutlandish dialect, and this refers to the location of the farm far off the beaten track, facing the Limfjord in the Salling. Here, the artists Nanna and Jeppe Aakjær lived from 1907, and this Limfjord Tale is about the life and work of the two artists.

When you visit Jenle, you don’t meet Nanna and Jeppe Aakjær – but it feels as if it is only a short while ago that they left the farm. The poet Jeppe Aakjær (1866-1930) married Nanna Krog in 1907, and immediately after the wedding they moved into the newly built farm, which to this day is one of the best preserved artists’ homes in the North.
The interior of Jenle is mostly crafted by Nanna Aakjær who was a joiner and a wood carver by profession. She was skilled, and everything is beautifully executed and of high artistic quality.

Nanna Aakjær died in 1962, 88 years old, and until her death she lived in Jenle. The year before she died, she sold the farm to her daughter, Solvejg, who sold it on to the Danish state in 1981. The farm house is now run by the municipality of Skive in accordance with an agreement with the state.

Jens Vejmand

Most of Jeppe Aakjær many works have been written in the study in the attic of Jenle. In his youth, he was a particularly keen controversialist, which among other things meant that he had to spend 17 days in prison sentenced for blasphemy. In words that could not be misunderstood, he broke with Indre Mission – an evangelical branch of the church of Denmark, which was expanding rapidly at that time.

However, in 1899 he made his literary breakthrough with the story “Bondens Søn” ("The Peasant's Son") and “Derude fra Kjærene”, a collection of poems. Thus, his works took three completely different directions: the socially indignant agitation, the peasant’s tales, and the lyrical and often singable regional poetry about the local people and nature.
