Dried fish and schnapps in Vorupør

The museum in the small fishing hamlet of Vorupør has been established in the old shipyard. The Limfjord Tale in Vorupør Museum is about the fishery, the lives of the fisherman in past times, and the religious revival, which played a great role for the people of Vorupør. You will also get the recipe for a good schnapps and taste dried fish.

100 years ago, Vorupør was a centre of fishery in the North Sea, and the fishery enjoyed even more success when a breakwater of 380 metres was built in 1910. When fishing was at its highest, 27 large boats hailed from Vorupør.
Today there is only a handful left, but they still land their fish directly onto the beach – they used to be pulled in and out by hand, but now it is done by a powerful motor winch. The arrival of a fishing boat is a big attraction for the many visitors in the fishing hamlet – and it always provides the opportunity to buy fresh and recently smoked fish in the fishing shops close to the landing place.

Museum about fishery and fishermen

Vorupør Museum is not situated in the old shipyard without a good reason – it was here that the fishing boats used to be built. Here you can hear about the fishery as it developed through time and about the living conditions of the fishermen with hard work, poverty, and their need of seeking comfort in the bottle.

The religious revival

Like in other fishing hamlets along the coast, the Home Mission played a significant role for the fishermen of Vorupør. It certainly was not free of risk to stand out to sea in all kinds of weather, and a firm belief could often be needed when someone’s loved one never returned, but found a “wet grave” out in rough seas. The Home Mission really gained a foothold in Vorupør after the great accident in 1885 when 8 out of 10 fishermen died in a terrible storm. This caused a lot of fishing families to seek comfort in a firm belief. This lead to the building of Home mission houses in both Southern and Northern Vorupør.

Something for the palate

This Limfjord Tale includes samples of dried fish. It depends on one’s personal taste if it can be called a delicacy, but drying fish was certainly one of the cheapest and best conservation methods of that time – and dried fish can keep for years. Many people are of the opinion that dries fish is easier to consume if it is accompanied by schnapps – and therefore you will get a good recipe along with the fish.
