At the King's command

Starting from Morsland Historical Museum in the old Dueholm Monastery, this Limfjord Tale will take us through Nykøbing Mors. On our way, we will stop to hear a lot of good stories about the history of the town, its buildings, and its population.

The name Nykøbing Mors is mentioned for the first time in 1299 at the King’s command. However, man and beast had been here long before that time, and in 1369 monks of the Order of St. John founded the Dueholm Monastery – at that time it was placed outside the town gate, but today it is situated in the middle of the town. The monastery is the starting point of this Limfjord Tale.
From Dueholm Monastery, the tour will take you across the filled-in mill pond and through what was once the western town gate to Algade.

Through Algade

Algade winds through the town and is today a pedestrian street with many
wonderful shops. The street has always been the main artery of the town, and it follows the same course as it did in the Middle Ages. However, there have been some alterations, especially caused by three large fires in the 1700s.

The four squares of the town

The main part of the town houses accounts for the shipping and trading town of Nykøbing, which developed into an industrial town with lively building activity in the years from 1870 to 1930. This Limfjord Tale takes you across three of the town squares, and each square tells its own unique stories. For instance, you will hear about the floods of the Klostertorv, the cattle markets of the Lilletorv, or about the sculpture of the Klostertorv. The Limfjord Tale ends in front of the old town hall on the fourth square of the town, Rådhustorvet, which is the centre of the town.
